Tales from the Trail of a YA Author – Follow Your Heart

Happy New Year !! 2014 is shaping up to be a year of big change and I have lots of cool stuff to fill you in on. But first I want to give a shout out to a friend, Karen Liz Albert, who is making huge strides in following her dream…to sing!

Karen is a social media consultant and president of Behind Your Curtain. Karen also happens to have a killer voice 1489066_690654310975005_2055027950_n-2 and has been performing regularly in Venice Beach on Saturdays at the Venice Bistro with the Ray Bandini Revue band (www.raybandini.com). In the past few months, however, she has decided to take it all to a whole new level and auditioned for The Voice!!!

Here’s an audio of the Janis Joplin song that Karen recorded in preparation for the audition, which has already opened new doors for the singer.

“Singing for me was just a side, fun thing I absolutely loved to do. I never really thought about it as more than a fun outlet,” Karen recently told me in a phone chat from her new home in northern California.

When Karen decided to audition for The Voice, she was re-introduced to LA music producer Drew Lane (www.drewrightmusic.com). She had met Drew briefly a few years earlier. Drew encouraged her to record not only “Piece of My Heart” but a whole CD’s worth of music, and is in discussions of signing her on his recording label!

The audition was a great life experience and even though Karen didn’t score an appearance on The Voice, she has no regrets. She enjoyed the process and auditioned along with her daughter Maya (also a fantastic singer).

But more importantly, the musical journey put her in touch with a great producer and gave her the confidence to follow her Heart and her muse! I wish her luck and can’t wait to hear the entire CD once its out! She’s also been approached by a talent agency to possibly be hired on an as-needed-basis for some Pro Acts throughout Central and Northern California.

Stay tuned and keep following your dreams! Good luck in 2014 and may all of you try new things. That’s what we’re here for, isn’t it?

And as for me, I’m moving ahead with my third novel and looking forward to being a guest author at the Huntington Beach Author’s Festival on January 28. I’m also ramping up for my upcoming East Coast book tour in February. More to follow and would love to hear about your courageous creative endeavors!
