Aaarrgghhg. Where did the summer go? For many of us here in LA, school starts this week! Tell me it ain’t so! Oh all right. I am excited for my daughter to start high school and I do have a lot of great school visits to look forward to!
And once we get back into the swing of things, I’m sure it’ll be Thanksgiving before we know it. But still, I never even got close to posting all of the things I meant to share about last year’s school visits because I kept stumbling onto other cool things all summer!
One program I’ve been meaning to write about was the Rock Band program at STAR Prep Academy in Culver City, CA.
I had the pleasure of speaking at STAR Prep’s http://www.starprepacademy.org Career Day this past spring and really loved meeting the faculty and kids at this tiny school located at the STAR ECO Station, an exotic wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.
STAR Prep’s students enjoy a robust curriculum and also take care of the animals and do many other community service projects. The school functions as a division of STAR Inc., a non-profit program provides the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) instruction. Thanks to its affiliation with STAR Inc, STAR Prep offers tons of electives including Rock Band, which is part of STAR Inc’s RockSTAR after-school program offered around the country.
RockSTAR teaches K-12 kids how to play instruments, compose songs, and perform classic hits as a rock ‘n’ roll band. And then throughout the year, RockSTAR students get incredible opportunities to play at world famous venues like the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip! I went to check it out one Sunday and had a blast. http://www.ihobf.org
“It began in LA and has spread to schools around the country,” explained Zahir Robb, head of STAR Prep Academy. “This program provides kids with a great group dynamic and opens the door to many opportunities.”
Other RockSTAR programs have performed at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Nashville and the Gibson Showroom in New York City!

Rock on! Hope everyone gets off to a great school year 2013/2014!!
